About
Trusted name in engineering education
Continuing education is a major pillar of the engineering profession.
I am a professional engineer, structural engineering professor, CSA S16 technical committee member, and the founder of STEELE training & consulting.
After completing my Ph.D., and before joining the academy, I practiced structural engineering for four years. I sat through many online courses and webinars during my own professional practice to satisfy the continuing professional development requirements of my association. I want to provide an avenue to professional development that is engaging, accessible, and high-quality by leveraging my experience in higher education.
My passion for teaching began as an undergraduate and has grown through my work as a professor at the University of New Brunswick, where I’ve taught structural steel design and earthquake engineering to hundreds of students over the past four years. As the structural engineering profession evolves – and as civil engineering programs become broader and less specialized – I’ve become increasingly motivated to bring academically rigorous, practice‑focused material to a wider audience.
I hope you take advantage of the results of my efforts.
Taylor C. Steele, Ph.D., P.Eng.
Engineer
In the office, I've worked on projects ranging from the analysis of existing commercial buildings to the design of contaminated filtered venting systems at nuclear generating facilities. Throughout my practice, I prioritized accuracy, practicality, and "making it work."
Researcher
In the lab, my research focuses on advancing the way we build steel structures to provide immediate occupancy after design-level earthquakes. I also perform research on structural steel and earthquake risk more generally.
Educator
What my students said about me:
“He is VERY, VERY, approachable and should be credited as one of, or the best civil engineering professor at UNB. He is a very effective professor, knows his course content very well, and delivers the course to perfection.”

“Taylor is an AMAZING professor and has truly established and reinforced that I want to be a civil engineer. It was intimidating walking into this course knowing the type of content that would be covered but Taylor has given my peers and I the tools to feel confident in approaching difficult problems and being able to ask for help and guidance. He was able to connect on a personal level that engaged the students in the class, I believe this to be effective as this class was consistently the most full out of all of my lecture halls. Thank you, Taylor, for creating an excitement towards a career in civil engineer.”

“Dr. Steele is one of the most efficient and passionate professors throughout my years at UNB. He has provided us with well-organized information, in clearly structured slides and detailed examples. He has given us a deep understanding of not only the theories of Structural Steel Design, but also how to apply our studies to practice. My favorite aspect about his teaching is how he has embedded his practical insights of steel design work and the industry into every lecture, every lab, and every assignment. He dedicated the labs to teach us about a commonly used software in steel design, and he organized many field trips that were interesting and educational. Especially, he has went above and beyond to help us with any questions, even outside of his office hours time, even when we were studying late.”
